Convenience
Most computer users think that backing up to physical media is a cumbersome task. Managing the backup disks/tapes also take some efforts. That is why typical PC users never backup their data.
If Backup To Neighbor is used, there is no physical medium to handle . No disk swap! No disk storage! Less Trouble!
Less Relying on People
Some company simply setup a file server and ask the employees to copy the data files to the server as backup copies. What's the result?? You would predict that not all people will do the backup regularly. In fact, most people are too lazy to do backup. Using Backup To Neighbor, a few mouse clicks will start the backup process. The software will do the rest!
Hard Disk vs CD-R/DVD-R
Almost all PC has CD-R drive nowadays. So, backing up files to CD-R is the most common method. The biggest problem is that CD-R capacity is 700MB only. DVD-R has much larger capacity, about 4.7GB. Nowadays, the capacity of ATA hard disk is over 200GB. Even the capacity of DVD-R is not enough for typical PC users.
Backup To Neighbor stores backup file to hard disk. The capacity of hard disk is much larger than CD-R/DVD-R. Also, hard disk space can be reused. So, it is more environment friendly than CD-R/DVD-R disk!
Hard Disk vs Backup Tape Cartridge
Backup Tape is also a common backup medium. However, tape drive is very expensive. It usually costs more than USD1,000. A set of tape cartridge will cost few hundreds more. So, typical home user cannot afford tape drive.
Also, tape drive is connected to one single computer permanently. So, the drive can serve one computer only. Additional and expensive software is needed to backup other computers through network. It is a very expensive solution. Therefore, backup tape cartridge is used in enterprise or server environment only. Not for the rest of us!
The cost, speed and reliability of hard disk are also better than tape drive.
